Is nuclear energy renewable?

In recent years, we began to understand the enormous power generated by nuclear energy. In the years just before and during World War II, nuclear research focused mainly on the development of defence weapons.

Later, scientists concentrated on peaceful applications of nuclear technology. An important use of nuclear energy is the generation of electricity. After years of research, scientists have successfully applied nuclear technology to many other scientific, medical, and industrial purposes.

Now the question is nuclear energy a renewable energy?
The answer is NO. Nuclear energy is a non- renewable energy.

Now the question is nuclear energy is a renewable energy?
The answer is NO. Before going for the explanation it is important to know about Nuclear energy.

What is Nuclear energy?

The energy released when two atoms are made to bombarded with each other is generally called as nuclear energy. Nuclear energy uses sustained nuclear fission to generate heat and electricity. This energy is not only used to generate electricity but also used to create atomic bombs.

Although they are tiny, atoms have a large amount of energy holding their nuclei together. Certain isotopes of some elements can be split and will release part of their energy as heat. This splitting is called fission. The heat released in fission can be used to help generate electric energy in power plants. An important event that is responsible for atomic energy is called Nuclear fission.

What is Nuclear energy?

The splitting of one atom into one or two atoms by releasing large amount of energy is called nuclear fission.

  • Uranium-235 (U-235) is one of the isotopes that fissions easily. During fission, U-235 atoms absorb loose neutrons.
  • This causes U-235 to become unstable and split into two light atoms called fission products.

A series of fissions is called a chain reaction. If enough uranium is brought together under the right conditions, a continuous chain reaction occurs. This is called a self-sustaining chain reaction. A self-sustaining chain reaction creates a great deal of heat, which can be used to help generate electricity and to create atomic bombs.

Nuclear energy is a non renewable energy

A non-renewable energy  is defined as a energy that is not continually being replenished by the environment at a rate that keeps up with demand for that substance.

The key element of nuclear energy is Uranium. Without Uranium’s help, nuclear energy cannot be produced. Uranium-235, which is used as the nuclear fuel, will eventually be depleted. It is mined from certain rock formations and is rare in its natural state. This explains why nuclear energy is considered as a non renewable energy.
